The old Art School in Bromley

Before my mother, Lore Gordon, was married, she was Lore Heimann. She wanted to do dressmaking, and applied to the Art School in Bromley, Kent, situated in Tweedy Road and did a City & Guilds dressmaking course there. The course ran from 1939 - 1941. Whilst the aim was to do the dressmaking, the course also included dress designing, history of costume, still-life painting, and machine embroidery.

The black & white photo shows my mother with friends from the Art School - the girls from left to right: Joan Davies (to become Day), Sheila Brown, and Mum...and the boy poking his head out from the left!: Victor Kuell (Photo: unknown taker, copyright reserved).

The colour photo shows the same passage behind the Art School as it is now. Although there have been many changes in Bromley, the passage here has changed little.

The last photo shows dresses that were designed by Mum. (The artwork is Copyright © Lore Gordon 1940)
